John Grady
is a Republican candidate for Judge of Galveston County Court Number 1.
John and his
wife, Patricia, have been Galveston Island west end residents for 12 years and
John has been a resident of the Houston area for nearly 30 years. After
obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in psychology from the University of
Houston, John’s introduction to the Texas court system began with his
employment as a Harris County adult probation officer in early 1992. In 1994,
he married Attorney Patricia Vargas and enrolled in law school at TSU in the
fall of that same year. While in law school, he worked as a law clerk for a
civil law firm in Houston and assisted with numerous cases involving family,
deceptive trade practices, maritime, personal injury and riparian rights law.
After obtaining
his J.D. and passing the Texas State Bar exam in 1997, John started a solo
practice in conjunction with that of his wife while still working with the law
firm in Houston. In March of 1999, he was offered and accepted a position as
prosecutor at the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office where he began as
a misdemeanor prosecutor and rose through the ranks to become a felony
prosecutor. While there, he prosecuted thousands
of criminal cases of all types and sat as first chair in scores of jury trials.
In 2002,
John resigned from the D.A.’s office under very good terms to restart his law
practice with Patricia and litigated nearly all types of cases but with a focus
on criminal law for over six years with offices in Houston and Galveston. Late in the summer of 2008, John was offered
a position returning to the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office which he
accepted about a week before the arrival of Hurricane Ike. He is admittedly
more comfortable on the prosecution side of criminal law than that of the
defense.
John currently
works as misdemeanor division chief where he interviews and trains new
prosecutors while maintaining his own caseload of misdemeanors and felonies.
Because of his diverse background involving probation, civil and both defense
and prosecution of criminal cases, John Grady is particularly qualified to
serve as Judge of a court that has jurisdiction over nearly all types of cases.
John reports that a defense attorney takes an oath to zealously represent his
client while a prosecutor takes an oath to see that justice is done which is
the main reason he returned to prosecution. He wishes to continue the pursuit of
justice while serving as judge in Galveston County.
John is a
lifelong conservative and enjoys memberships at the Texas District and County
Attorneys Association, the Galveston Republican Network, the Galveston
Pachyderm Club, the National Rifle Association and Galveston Rotary. His
interests include hunting, fishing and sailing.
